অত্র থানাটি পূর্বে পবা থানা নামে রাজশাহী জেলার অর্ন্তভুক্ত ছিল। ১৯৯২ সালের ১লা জুলাই রাজশাহী মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশ আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে কার্যক্রম শুরু করলে উক্ত তারিখে শাহমখদুম থানার কার্যক্রম শুরু হয়।
